The Challenge

The project combined conservation themes with a familiar object: a deck of playing cards. Its central challenge was to introduce a distinctive visual narrative while preserving the hierarchy and recognition required for play.

The design needed to succeed as both an illustrated collection and a coherent system.

My Role & Strategic Response

I developed the project from research and illustration through the complete deck and packaging.

My strategy assigned each suit a bird species, creating a framework for variation. Typography, recurring layouts, and suit identification provided the consistent structure necessary to hold the collection together.

Design Resolution

The deck combines individual illustrations with a shared graphic hierarchy across 52 cards. Packaging extends the visual direction and presents the work as a unified collection.

The relationship between expressive imagery and repeated structure allows the project to demonstrate both individual craft and systematic thinking.

Outcome

The project received ADDY recognition for typography and illustration. It shows my ability to carry a visual concept through a detailed series while balancing character, consistency, and function.
